Not Anyone Will Do

Note: This is an old conversation between Shintarō and Mika Midorima aka Sailor Orthosie back when they were both going to Teikō. Shintarō is in 8th grade. Mika is in 7th grade.

~In the Midorima residence~

Mika knocked on Shintarō's door.

Shintarō replies “Come in.” as he is reading a book.

Mika opened the door and entered her brother’s room.

Shintarō turned his head to see his sister and asked “What is it, Mika? Sit down nanodayo.”

Mika sat on her brother’s bed before saying “So~. Shin onii-san! You're getting popular lately! People are calling you and your basketball teammates "The Generation of Miracles."”

“Of course, we're all prodigies when it comes to the sport. But I have a feeling this isn't just what you've come to talk about nanodayo.”

Mika’s eyes sparkled and she held up her fists. “Well, do you think you could introduce me to your teammates? I'd love to see their skills in person.”

Shintarō looked directly at Mika as he said “I refuse nanodayo.”

Mika had a shocked expression as she asked “Eh? Why not?!”

“You are my younger sister. It would be improper to spend time with each other in public nanodayo.”

Mika scoffed as she retorted “By one year!”

“It does not change the fact that you are still my younger sister nanodayo.”

Mika felt annoyed, closed her eyes, and stood up from the bed as she said  “Hmph.”

“By the way Mika, which of my teammates are you interested in?”

Mika sat down abruptly and answered “Well, for me…” She titled her head in thought before looking at her big brother again and smiling “It's Aomine-san!”

Shintarō freaked out as he responded Ahhh!!!! No!!!!

Mika sweated “Shin onii-san! Chill out! What's the matter?”

Shintarō held a hand out as he replied “I absolutely refuse nanodayo. Mika, Aomine is completely unworthy of you. He is unworthy of being called "san". All he does is sleep in class and he brings inappropriate magazines of women to school.”

Mika blushed as she exclaimed “Shin onii-san! I didn't mean I was interested in him like that! I just like how he can shoot from any angle. But thanks for warning me about him, that's so gross.”

Shintarō put his hand down as he replied “Oh, well it's perfectly fine to admire his ability. ...What kind of qualities do you look for in a potential love interest?

Mika blushed “Shin onii-san! Why is our conversation getting so weird now? ...But...” She gently pushed the pads of her index fingers against one another while smiling and blushing. “I guess I like cheerful people.”

Shintarō pondered “The only one among the Generation of Miracles with that quality would be Kise, I suppose.”

Mika held her hands to her face with her mouth in an o as she thought to herself. "No wonder he's got a great smile from the pictures I've seen of him!"

“No.”

“What? Shin onii-san! What are you thinking?! I'm not romantically interested in Kise-san! I'd be really shallow to fall for a guy just because he's good looking and a model! Plus, I wouldn't measure up to his fashion standards and his fangirls may kill me!”

“Good. We have the same blood flowing through us after all.”

Mika frowned at that remark.

“Kise is also unworthy of being called "san" let alone be with you. He may be the oldest of the Generation of Miracles but he's a shallow airhead that looks down on others.”

“Oh... But wow, he's the oldest? No wonder he's a model, he ages like a vampire!” Mika sounded amazed near the end of her remark.

“But I reiterate, no. Murasakibara is also a no nanodayo.”

“Well, he's lucky to be super tall but he's taller than you, isn't he, Shin onii-san?”

“Yes.”

Mika sweated and awkwardly smiled “Well, if I came up to him, I think I'd be intimidated by Murasakibara-san's height anyways let alone be interested.”

“Regardless of his height, he's of little brain. He's like a simple-minded child with deplorable manners and he is absolutely not worthy of being called "san" nanodayo.”

Mika retorted in an annoyed tone “On the hypothetical situation that I was actually crazy enough to be interested in dating one of the Generation of Miracles, I guess none of them is good enough for you and me huh, Shin onii-san?”

Shintarō looked to the side. “Well... I didn't say none, nanodayo.”

Mika looked horrified as she exclaimed “You mean Akashi-san?! Sure, he's well-bred and wealthy but there's no way I'll be able to measure up to the life he lives!”

Shintarō smirked. “On the contrary, he is the least tall out of all of us. You'll be able to reach him.”

Mika angrily replied. “Shin onii-san, you know that's not what I meant! Ugh, just forget we had this conversation!”

She abruptly stood up and slammed Shintarō's door!

~Months Later~

Shintarō asked “Mika, remember what I said about Akashi being the most suitable love interest for you?”

Mika was unsure as to why her brother would bring up this topiuc which made her look baffled and sweated as she replied “Yes...”

“Forget about him. He is not good enough for you either nanodayo.”

Mika was annoyed as she responded “Ugh, Shin onii-san! On the chance I wanted to be with a guy, he wouldn't be good enough for you, huh?”

“Mika, what do you mean by on the chance?”

“Uh...”

Shintarō looked displeased as he said “Mika...”

“Well, I like both guys and girls, ok?”

Shintarō was stunned by his sister’s response.

“I noticed I was also physically attracted to girls when I was younger and at this point in time, I know I like both sexes. Shin onii-san, this isn't gonna make you see me differently, right?” Mika looked concerned.

Shintarō’s eyes had a bit of softness to them even as he looked somewhat somber “No, of course not. You're my younger sister, that's how you are. That's not going to change our relationship nanodayo.”

Mika smiled with her eyes closed. "I'm glad to hear that ...You're not gonna tell Oka-san and Oto-san right?" Her face looked shocked.

“That isn’t necessary, but you do know that Oka-san and Oto-san will know about this eventually right?”

Mika sweated as she smiled. “I'll worry about it then when that time comes.”

Narrator: "Mika continues to idolize the Generation of Miracles, however, due to the awkwardness of the old conversations brought between the Midorima siblings, she has forgotten about her wish to meet the Generation of Miracles until one fateful day..."
