Background

Her father’s maternal clan had an ancestor who nursed a golden eagle spirit who had a broken wing and as thanks for being nursed back to health, the golden eagle spirit shared its eyesight with the ancestor who later suffered from partial blindness.

Ciel is the youngest child of Fujin and Amelie Kanahisa. Fujin is mixed Japanese and Kazakh. Her older brother, Zéphyr, was to be the heir behind the Golden Airlines company and as her parents were busy with work, she was usually neglected by them.

Zéphyr took basketball classes and was able to teach Ciel when she was 5 years old, and he was 8 years old. She was enrolled in a prestigious all-girls’ academy known as L’Academie pour les filles royale des Jardins and joined the basketball team. She became a starter and a small forward for the basketball team. She also became friends with her fellow starters. She and her fellow starters were dubbed “The Princesses of Basketball” since they were prodigies.

Due to her family’s business, they had to move to Yokohama in autumn. However, her friends transferred to Japan as well. Some were in other parts of Japan like she was while some were in Tokyo, forcing them to become rivals against one another. Her jersey number in L’Academie pour les filles royales des Jardins was #7 while her jersey number at Kaijō High is #6.

Relationships

Family

Parents — Fujin and Amelie Kanahisa, Zéphyr Kanahisa (older brother)

They invested more in her older brother, Zéphyr, because he was the future heir of Golden Airlines whereas they tended to neglect her because of work. This caused her to feel some resentment towards her parents and desire to move out when she came of age so she could live freely.

Ciel was born when Zéphyr was three years old. Zéphyr was excited about Ciel’s conception because he wanted to be a big brother and take care of his little sister. Because they spent a lot of time together, they share common interests such as basketball, archery, horses, horseback riding, and hawks. They rarely argue with each other and care a lot about one another. Ciel doesn’t envy Zéphyr for being the family heir and doesn’t want to be burdened with responsibilities to parents who did not spend much time with her. They later hind out about each other’s alter egos as Ciel is Sailor Cressida and Zéphyr is Aethra Knight and cooperate with one another.

Friends

Allette Shiratori aka Sailor Leda

Ciel was the first person who extended her hand to her when Allette applied to L’academie pour les filles royale des Jardins and befriended her. Aside from their mutual love of basketball, they bonded over their families having birds’ eyes, being mixed Japanese, having three ethnicities, and clothes design. Ciel told Allette how her parents neglect her and how she doesn’t feel obligated to contribute to the family business they neglected her for and wants to live freely. Allette could somewhat relate given that her parents were busy with work, but she loved her father. Blanche, Allette’s mother, was aware of Allette's friendship with Ciel and disliked Ciel’s viewpoint which is why she disapproved of her daughter’s friendship with Ciel Kanahisa. After Jūban High defeated Kaijō High, they were able to reconcile their friendship.

Rivals

Her fellow Princesses of Basketball used to be her fellow basketball teammates and good friends. But as their strengths in basketball grew, their friendship weakened. When they all moved to Japan in autumn, they transferred to different schools, making them rivals among each other to prove which one of them is the strongest Princess of Basketball. It wasn't until later on that they would regain their friendship due to Allette Shiratori's efforts.

Love Interests

Takuma Shinsō aka Hermes Knight

In their past lives, they met during Princess Serenity’s and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball. When they asked the attendees to dance with a person from another home celestial body, their eyes met, and he smiled at her before inviting her to dance. They talked during and after the dance then kissed in the hallway of the Moon Castle. In modern days, they first met each other at Yokohama Park. Takuma was planning on practicing soccer by himself, but he was stunned by the beauty of the older girl who was playing basketball by herself and introduced himself to her. As Takuma and Ciel got to know one another, cooperate in their alter egos, play basketball with each other, he eventually confessed to the Princess of Basketball, freeing her from the witch’s curse placed on her heart.

Her type of guy is a charismatic one.

Inspirations

Nash Gold Jr. from Kuroko's Basketball did not have golden hair and golden eyes hence I wanted a Princess of Basketball with the signature color of gold. Thanks to my coauthor cousin who suggested that she would want to move out when she was of age and thanks to Rose who suggested her parents neglected her. She is an expy of Amir Halgal from A Bride's Story and in her earlier design stages, I wanted her to be associated with the eagle and have eagle eyes and since golden eagles are from Kazakhstan which is where Amir Halgal is from, it worked out. Since we have only seen Amir Halgal's older brother despite it being canonically stated that she has multiple siblings, I only gave Ciel an older brother. My new music box from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam has the Air Opening theme song, and I wanted to include it in one of the Uranian Moon Sailor Guardian's soundtracks. Her stats came from Ryōta Kise who is her counterpart on the Generation of Miracles. Her attacks are inspired by how Golden Eagles attack their prey.
