In addition to being prideful and pushy, she’s also rather boy crazy and often engages in making sure she has chances to socialize with boys who are on her radar. She’s quite an artistic soul as she likens her position on her team as point guard to being an orchestra conductor and has musical talents aside from an overactive imagination. She is quite stubborn but on the other hand, she’s also brave and resilient when it comes to protecting her loved ones. She’s also a busybody so she tends to be caught up on celebrity news and news around Kaijō High as well as give advice whether it’s warranted or not.

She can do playmaking to help the team score with lay ups, mid-range shots, and three pointers. Her best skills are drives and crossover dribbles.

Background

She is the only daughter of Hoshi and Aina Umino. Hoshi Umino is a famous orchestra conductor and Aina is a concierge at Hotel Del Mar in Yokohama City. Her mother named her “Aimi” because she wanted her daughter to have a similar sounding name and her daughter inherited Hoshi’s dark azure hair, and her vivid cyan eyes of her daughter’s features reminded her of the sea.

As her parents were busy with their work, Aimi was often left in the care of a babysitter. It wasn’t until she was 3 that she met a friend for life named Umiko Kaisei, who was the reincarnation of her teammate, Sailor Thalassa. They later went on a camping trip to a nearby mountain.

When Aimi was 4 years old, she was watching a basketball game with her father, and she noticed the point guard holding up his finger and asked her father. “Papa, why is that man waving his finger like when you wave a stick?”

Hoshi replied “I’ve never thought of it that way. He’s the point guard. He tells the other players how they should play.”

“Kind of like how you tell the people how to play their instruments.”

Hoshi continued “You have a good point Aimi. He does control the game’s speed as well.”

Since Aimi continued to watch the game with a fascination towards the point guard, her father asked her if she would like to try playing basketball and she said that she would like to. She enjoyed playing basketball and decided to introduce Umiko to the sport.

Within the same year, Aimi had a foretelling dream of Umiko being thrown into the ocean so Umiko’s father, Ikuo, drove her, her mother, and her babysitter to Ocean Gate business park where he suspected his wife would discard their child into the ocean. Just as Umiko’s mother, Masuyo Kaneko, was about to escape after getting caught in the act, Aimi kicked her hard in the knee and she and Umiko were able to get away with Aimi’s babysitter. Aimi was scolded by the adults for being reckless but praised for being brave.

When she was 6, she got a blue-and-yellow macaw that she named “Suki”. Aimi attended Kanagawa Junior High with Umiko. She was the point guard of Kanagawa Junior High’s girls’ basketball team while Umiko was the center. After having dreams of their past lives, she and Umiko awakened as Sailor Guardians at the ages of 13 and 14. She is Sailor Laomedeia while Umiko is Sailor Thalassa. She eventually became the captain of Kanagawa Junior High’s girls’ basketball team in her third year before she had to retire to focus on high school entrance exams. She and Umiko were recruited by the coach of Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team which made them decide to attend Kaijō High for high school.

In high school, she and Aimi started interning at Hotel Del Mar. In her second year, she became the vice-captain of Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team, and her jersey number is #5. It wasn't until Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team lost to Jūban’s girls’ basketball team that she became the new captain of Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team.

Her father was not around much because of his job as an orchestra conductor so Hoshi made sure to be with Aimi when he could and Aimi valued the time they spent together even if they were just near one another. He taught her how to play the piano and him watching a basketball match and her likening the position of point guard to his job as an orchestra conductor made him think of enrolling Aimi into Mini-Basketball which worked out. She tries to attend his concerts when possible and listens to her father’s CD’s.

Her mother wanted her to have a similar name to her and due to her daughter’s ocean blue features, she named her Aimi. Compared to her husband, she is at least around Aimi more often and taught her how to cook and made cookies with her. Aina often talks to Aimi about her crushes and jokes that she regrets naming her daughter “Aimi” because it seems that her daughter likes every good-looking guy on the planet. However, However, much to her embarrassment, Hoshi has pointed out that she was the same when she was younger. When it comes to their eyes and common interests in cooking, baking, make up, and fashion, the two of them are practically peas in a pod.

The two of them have been childhood friends since the third grade due to Yura’s father, Yutaka, enrolling her in the same Mini-Basketball program. Their fathers started to get to know one another better since they were also friendly with one another. They attended the same junior high school and high school and were on the schools’ basketball teams with one another. Aimi proudly declares herself to be Yura’s #1 fan. However, it is hard for them to spend time together aside from class and team obligations at times since Yura is usually receptive to her fans and has idol duties but usually invites her basketball team to her concerts. Aimi was worried about Yura after she lost her place on the team, but she was glad to see her friend had accepted the situation gracefully and continued to support their team.

When Kaijō and Touou had a practice match, Aimi and Umiko suspected that Mihiro was related to Yukio Kasamatsu given the visible resemblance and the same last name. During their practice match, it was clear that Mihiro was the stronger point guard. She had gained Aimi’s respect to the point Aimi called her “senpai” even though they went to different schools. When her team was going to face Touou in the Inter-High, Aimi trained to get stronger but unfortunately, she still lost to Mihiro.

Allette Shiratori aka Sailor Leda

Knowing that she would have to mark a Princess of Basketball as they had the same position, Aimi trained hard for the upcoming day. She initially disliked her thinking she was stuck up. Although she was taller than Allette, the younger girl was more clever, faster, and resilient. Still, Aimi refused to give up against her. Even though she lost, Allette initiated a handshake to Aimi for the sake of sportsmanship and they both agreed to play together again. When Mihiro Kasamatsu initiated a Sailor Guardian Point Guard get together, Aimi talked to Allette about fashion.

Although Aimi thought her upperclassman was attractive, cool, and talented despite his shyness towards girls, she didn’t really think of them being together since she knew about Umiko’s feelings for him and hoped her best friend would end up with him. However, much to her embarrassment and excitement, sometimes Yukio would end up in her harem dreams! They didn’t really talk until they met in the music room and Aimi was practicing a song on the piano for the joint farewell party for Kaijō’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams to send off the seniors.

Ryōta Kise

Aimi is a fan of the model, Ryōta Kise, and liked him more when he got into basketball. She has a collection of his magazines. She’s happy that they go to the same high school because she can at least catch a glimpse of him every day. She waves and says “Hi Kise-kun!” when she can. Aimi also tries to talk to Ryōta as much as she can about basketball which makes his other fans jealous but Aimi with her stubbornness likes to spite the other fans which stresses out Ryōta until Aimi’s friends, Umiko and Shion pull her away for own good. Much to her embarrassment and excitement, Ryōta also comes into her harem dreams!

Shinya Nakamura

Even if Shinya was just a bench player on the basketball team, Aimi thought that her classmate was tall, handsome, and had a decent build. When she looked into him, she found that he was famous for his defense as a basketball player in junior high which attracted her to him even more. Aimi tried to make conversation with her soft-spoken classmate. Much to her embarrassment and excitement, Shinya has also appeared in her harem dreams. However, she found out about his interest in ghost movies much to her disappointment as she hated ghosts! Plus, her feelings for Ash started to grow stronger and Shinya started to have feelings for another girl. In the end, they stayed good friends.

Satoshi "Ash" Ketchum aka Neptunus Knight

When Kairi Mizuno asked the coach to give her one day off from practice so she could pick up Satoshi from the airport which made her teammates curious about him. When Aimi saw his picture on Kairi’s phone, she instantly recognized him as Asphaleios from her previous life despite the differences in his current appearance. They were lovers in their previous lives. Aimi then told Kairi to have her cousin meet her at a certain place and cheerfully said “It’s a date then!” Even though Ash was unintentionally roped into a “date”, he did enjoy Aimi showing him around Yokohama. Ash likes girls with blue eyes, but Aimi also had blue hair which made him think she was cute plus the fact she was slightly shorter than him was a bonus. Aimi also made him tasty foods given the opportunity which he happily accepted. The two of them appreciate each other’s talents. Aimi loves talented guys, so she liked that Ash knew how to play basketball and was an excellent baseball pitcher. Ash is amazed by the fact that Aimi is not only a talented singer and piano player but also a good point guard. They both love animals. Ash enjoys spending time with her parrot, Suki. In Aimi’s imagination (based on a scene from the movie, Eat, Pray, Love) Ash invited Aimi to an island alone with him and 400 parrots. He has also appeared in her harem dreams much to her excitement and embarrassment. The two of them are both stubborn and determined to defend their loved ones. However, Aimi surprisingly doesn’t fight with Ash unless he does something reckless or lets negativity get the best of him. In the end, Aimi chooses Ash as she finds she is madly in love with him and they have been lovers in multiple lives.

In their previous lives, they befriended each other at a ball hosted by Neptune’s royal family, and they got to meet again at Princess Serenity’s and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball. She is her childhood friend. They went on a camping trip and had many other playdates and outings together. Aimi introduced her to basketball, and she fell in love with the sport. They also enjoy swimming together. Since junior high, they discovered their alter egos. Umiko kissed Satoshi on the cheek together with Aimi Umino kissing his other cheek which made his cheeks flush red and give a goofy smile. Since junior high, Umiko has been the captain while Aimi played on the same team. Aimi was the first member of the Kasamatsu Secret Fan Club since right after Umiko decided to buy charm bracelets with letters to spell out “Yukio Kasamatsu” and decided to start a secret fan club, she asked her “Would you join my secret fan club?” Aimi smiled as she excitedly agreed to join since Kasamatsu was cool. She then listened to Umiko come up with the rules for the fan club. They were each other’s maid of honor at their weddings. They both attended Yukio’s and Ryōta’s wedding.

Oki Shima aka Sailor Neso

In their previous lives, they gathered during their initiation ceremony as Princess Neptune’s guardian Sailor Guardians. During a ball hosted by Neptune’s royal family, Neso offered Laomedeia some food and Laomedeia cheerfully thanked her. During Princess Serenity’s and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball, Thalassa approached Neso to talk to her and Laomedeia joined in their conversation and befriended Neso in the process. The two of them encountered each other in Kanagawa Junior High while Aimi was applying for the girls’ basketball team and Oki was taking notes. Since Umiko was friends with Oki, the team’s manager, Aimi started hanging out with her as well. Oki calls Aimi “Aimi-chan” and Aimi calls her “Oki-san”. Aimi loves Oki’s cheesecake and her cooking in general, so she likes to learn about baking and cooking from the older girl aside from cooking together. She tries to include Oki on her shopping trips when possible. They awakened as Sailor Guardians when Oki was 14 and Aimi was 13 and learned that they were comrades serving the same princess. Oki said that they must be fated to be good friends again in their current lives and Aimi agreed. When Oki offered everyone to eat lunch at her family restaurant on a Sunday following Ash’s arrival and offered a chocolate dessert, Aimi suggested Oki make a chocolate cheesecake that they both can share, and Oki decided to make the cake big enough for everyone to share which Aimi thought was a good idea.

Shion Fuyumi aka Sailor Larissa

Both are classmates which allowed them to be better friends since they’re also basketball teammates. In addition, both are members of the Yukio Kasamatsu Secret Fan Club since Umiko and Aimi recruited her and Shion was initially not convinced since she saw the Kaijō’s boys’ basketball match during the Inter-High and while he had been a good point guard, he missed a critical pass which cost them the Inter-High. Umiko and Aimi rebuked her for saying that by telling her to put herself in his place and describing his situation to her made her feel a little guilty. They even told her that since Coach Takeuchi made him captain, he was working hard to make himself worthy of the position. Shion said that even though they seemed to have a good understanding of his feelings, she couldn’t just take their words for it, so they made her watch his practice from the hallway and she was finally convinced after seeing him act as captain and his muscular arms. Even though Shion is tomboyish, tough, and seems cold and Aimi is girly and approachable, Aimi approached her first and they often hang out together with Umiko and or Kairi. They gush over muscles on boys, enjoy shopping, and dressing up together. When Aimi antagonizes her fellow Ryōta Kise fans, she or Umiko will drag her away for her own good.

Kairi Mizuno aka Sailor Naiad

When Aimi learned about Kairi's upbringing, she went out of her way to teach Kairi how to be a girl. Aimi calls her "Kairi-chan" and Kairi calls her "Aimi-senpai", "senpai", and "Aimi-san". While dragging Kairi on a shopping trip, Kairi noticed a bead jewelry kit and Aimi encouraged her to buy it. Thanks to Aimi's encouragement, Kairi discovered that she has a knack for making bead jewelry. When Kairi asked the coach to give her a day off from practice so she could pick up her fourth cousin from the airport, Aimi then told Kairi to have her cousin meet her at a certain place and cheerfully said "It's a date then!" Kairi called out "Aimi-senpai!" in an upset tone before feeling bad that both she and her cousin were roped into this situation. Kairi hangs out with Aimi the most out of all her older teammates. When Kairi transformed for the first time, they both complemented how cute each other's fuku were.

Inspirations

Aimi's character design and personality was inspired by Hanon Hosho from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. Seeing that Marin from Naoko Takeuchi's Wink Rain inspired me to give the same surname as Umino even though she has no relation to Gurio Umino. Her motif being iridescent bubbles was inspired by the childhood friends who dreamt that I was Sailor Moon as Sailor Moon's transformation item in that dream had iridescent bubble beads and a heart pendant. Our mutual friend said they were probably lying but the visuals of their dream still inspired me! The idea of her mother wanting a similar sounding name was inspired by Rose's Hana Shirakami .
