Sota was good friends with Fujin Kanahisa back when Fujin lived in Yokohama and they wanted to arrange a marriage between one of Sota’s twin daughters and Fujin’s son, Zéphyr.
When Kotomi and Kotori were 8 years old, they got to go to Paris, France for a family vacation so Sota could see his friend, Fujin Kanahisa, again and they got to meet the Kanahisa children. Both twins were curious about the sport Zéphyr was playing with his sister, Ciel, then he taught the twins to play basketball so they could all play together.
Sota enrolled them in Mini-Basketball after their family trip. Kotomi had no romantic interest in Zéphyr but her twin, Kotori, did so her father and Fujin Kanahisa arranged for their engagement. When they were 9 years old, she wanted to take flute lessons while Kotomi wanted to take singing lessons. They were ok with taking their twin’s desired lesson as well, so their mother enrolled them for both.

In their last year of junior high, Kotomi was promoted to captain while Kotori was promoted to vice-captain. Relationships
Family
Sota and Kumori Amamoto — parents, Kotori Amamoto (younger twin sister)
Their parents had high expectations for them, so they had them learn dance and tennis at young ages. Both parents discuss decisions concerning their twin daughters together. Kumori wanted them to learn how to dance while Sota wanted them to learn how to play tennis. Sota enrolled them in Mini-Basketball after seeing how much they enjoyed playing basketball with Zéphyr and Ciel Kanahisa. When Kotomi expressed interest in wanting to play the flute and Kotori expressed interest in wanting to take singing classes, her mother enrolled them in flute and singing classes. Both parents are pleased to see her excel in the classes she takes as well as hear her earnestly participate in her student council duties.
Even during their past lives in the Silver Millennium, they came into the world as identical twins born five minutes apart. They were always together and even in their past lives as daughters of a Uranian duke, they took dancing, flute, and singing classes together. In modern days, in addition to taking those classes, they received tennis classes and were enrolled in Mini-Basketball after their childhood friend, Zéphyr Kanahisa, taught them how to play and they enjoyed playing the sport with him and his younger sister, Ciel. Both play tennis or basketball against one another. Although they enjoy tennis and basketball, they prefer playing basketball because it’s a more intensive workout and is more collaborative than tennis. They both have leadership traits and like being involved in the school community, so they are always on the school council together.
Friends
Zéphyr Kanahisa aka Aethra Knight
Kotomi isn’t romantically interested in Zéphyr because he is so serious. However, she appreciates the fact that he taught her and Kotori how to play basketball. Kotomi is aware of Kotori’s feelings for Zéphyr and supports their relationship because only they can take care of the other like no one else can. She has threatened Zéphyr that she will beat him up if he ever hurts Kotori’s heart and he always earnestly replies that he would never do that. Kotori is always embarrassed when Kotomi threatens to beat Zéphyr up but Zéphyr reassures her that he understands where Kotomi is coming from because he would do the same thing for Ciel. They both discover each other’s alter egos and cooperate in battle.
Sora Tenou aka Ouranos Knight
In his past life, he was present for the initiation ceremony for Princess Uranus’s guardian Sailor Guardians. As Sora is her princess’s twin brother, Kotomi is ready to support him in battle and even protects him if need be. Sora appreciates Kotomi’s support and is ready to aid her if needed if she gets into a dangerous situation during battle. While Sailor Miranda is willing to listen to Ouranos Knight’s plans, there are times when Sailor Miranda tells Ouranos Knight “I say we skip the plan and wing it.” Ouranos Knight can get a bit upset at times but is willing to compromise with Sailor Miranda. Both put their heads together to figure things out when cooperating and out of battle, they talk about the sports they participate in.

Inspirations
I had a dream with strong red violet wind, so I decided to make that color Sailor Miranda's primary color. The painting, Miranda—The Tempest (1916) inspired Miranda's accent color. Aside from sharing personality traits with Miranda from The Tempest and "Tempest" being referenced in her attack names, my coauthor cousin made me realize the color scheme for Sailor Miranda was similar to Disney's Esmeralda, so I incorporated Esmeralda's hairstyle, personality, height, and earrings for her Senshi identity aside from songs related to Esmeralda from Hunchback of Notre Dame into her soundtrack. I wanted Kotomi's twin to look like Cinderella, so they have light blue eyes aside from platinum blond hair. I have original characters in Senshi no Basuke with "moto" in their surname, so I decided to continue the pattern with Kotomi and Kotori. I thought of Pocahonta's Grandmother Willow as to why Kotomi isn't romantically interested in Zéphyr Kanahisa for being so serious. Winging plans with Sora were inspired by Mulan's interactions with Shang in Mulan II. Her attack names were also inspired by Kanaria from Rozen Maiden. The day in her birthday is what you get when you add 5 (Miranda's designation number) and 18 (Prospero's designation number.) Thanks to the Disney wikia for describing Esmeralda's hair and personality to help me describe Kotomi's hair and personality. Thanks to my coauthor cousin for helping me decide that Kotomi and Kotori would be identical twins and that Sailor Miranda's weapon would be a flute. Since I believe twin characters should have similar voices, after listening to Yui Horie's voice acting video compilation, I decided to go with Yui Horie for Kotomi and Kotori.
