She may be easygoing, but she is also serious when she has a resolve to see something through such as her mission, winning a basketball match, or asserting her feelings. Kairi is a strong, agile shooting guard. Her best skills are her three pointers which are done in the form of a jump shot known as “Fountain” and a fadeaway known as “Wave” and her defense.

Her father, Ryōsuke Mizuno, came from a wealthy family of doctors and so he followed that path. Her mother, Eimi Takinoue, was the great-great niece of the former fishing king, Genji Takinoue (from Grander Musashi). She was an environmental science university professor. At 14 weeks, it was found that Eimi was expecting a boy and she wanted to name her son “Kai” meaning “sea”, but she had an abdominal trauma accident due to the fall she had at campus which caused her to miscarry and have psychotic depression. Eimi believed that if she was intimate with her husband, there was a chance her son could come back and although Ryōsuke gave her medication after diagnosing her with psychotic depression, he gave in to her desire to be intimate because he loved her too much and hoped that his wife could be happy again if they conceived a child.
After Eimi got pregnant, they stopped giving her medication, but she seemed to be very happy. Because of Eimi’s psychotic depression, she chose to stay in her home. On March 1st, Eimi gave birth to a daughter, but she happily called her baby “Kai”. Ryōsuke registered his child’s name on her birth certificate as “Mizuno Kairi” without his wife knowing while she took care of their daughter at home. Ryōsuke resumed giving his wife medication to treat her psychotic depression and signed her up for talk therapy. While the medication and her love for her child helped stabilize her mood, the talk therapy didn’t seem to have an effect in helping her realize her “son” was female.
When Kairi was a child, her father told her that she was a girl despite what her mother thought but they lost her brother, Kai, a long time ago and she must pretend to be a boy with the same name to make her mother happy because her mother was too weak and would not be able to handle the truth. Despite how young she was at the time, she understood that it was important for her to pretend to be a boy for her mother’s happiness. At the age of 5, she was enrolled in Mini-Basketball because her father hoped that it would make her tall. There, she met the son of the nurse who worked alongside her father, Yukio Kasamatsu, and his cousin, Mihiro Kasamatsu. She grew to love the sport as she befriended the Kasamatsu cousins. During the summer, she met her fourth cousin, Satoshi “Ash” Ketchum while going on a fishing trip with her second cousin twice removed, Musashi Kazama (from Grander Musashi), Satoshi’s grandfather, Musashi’s wife and Musashi’s daughter. Through that trip, she befriended Satoshi, learned how to fish, and enjoyed it. She, Satoshi, and Musashi are descendants of Poseidon through Acastus, Pelia’s son. At the age of 6, she met Yukio’s younger brother, Hideo, at Mini-Basketball and befriended him as well. In the 2nd grade, she took kendo classes with Mihiro under Mihiro’s father.
For 15 years, Kairi had to live as a boy named “Kai”. Her father was very fastidious about when she had to get her hair cut. When Kairi’s chest started developing, she had to start bandaging her bust during the day. With this occurrence, her father set a condition that she had to lock the door to her room before she slept.
Kairi was part of the Kanagawa Junior High basketball team as the shooting guard. She admired Reo Mibuchi’s shooting style and thought that she could do something similar in terms of developing multiple shooting forms for three pointers. “Fountain” was a jump shot while “Wave” was a fadeaway shot. This caused her to be nicknamed “Water Spirit Shooter” for her fluid dubbed shooting styles and fluid like movements while shooting but she had to avoid the Basketball Monthly Interview out of fear that her identity could be discovered.
One fateful summer night, Kairi closed the door to her room but forgot to lock the door so Eimi came in while Kairi was sleeping and when she saw Kairi in feminine pajamas and her bust, she could no longer deny that her child was really a daughter and she collapsed. Soon after, Kairi woke up and when she saw her mother on the ground, she called 119. The emotional shock of seeing her child’s true form caused Eimi to die of a broken heart. As Eimi was on her death bed, she apologized to her child because she was too weak to let go of her brother which made her suffer from the moment she was born. Kairi stated that it wasn’t true, and her mother died after apologizing to her again and calling her Kairi for the last time.
After her mother’s death, she thought of quitting basketball but Hideo, her childhood friend and teammate encouraged her to stay along with her other teammates saying that her mother would be upset if she quit because of her. During a tough game, her stamina was drained after making multiple three pointers to make her team win as her stamina was slightly lacking compared to males, so she ended up falling due to fatigue, but the captain and Hideo catch her in time and support her. But the captain and Hideo noticed that her arms were soft. The captain gently nudged her which allowed him and Hideo to see that she had no Adam’s apple. After her identity was discovered, she was asked to quit the team.
Kairi planned to completely quit basketball since her identity was discovered by the team but decided to finish the rest of the year as “Kai Mizuno”. Genta Takeuchi sought her out to recruit her to Kaijō High, not knowing that she was really a girl as her scandal was kept to Kanagawa Junior High’s boys’ basketball team. She told Genta Takeuchi the truth and why she had to cross-dress then he told her that he would refer her to the coach of Kaijō High’s girls’ basketball team because it would be a shame if she quit.
After getting recruited by the coach of Kaijō High’s girls’ basketball team, she met the captain of the girls’ team, Umiko Kaisei, who listened to the story of Kairi being forced to cross-dress which Kairi retold to the coach of Kaijō High girls’ basketball team. Umiko already knew from her past life memories that Kairi was a fellow reincarnated Neptunian Moon Sailor Guardian and told Kairi that she is free to live as a girl now and that if she needed help navigating life as a girl then she has friends on the Kaijō High girls’ basketball team who can help her with that. Umiko also helpfully advised her that if she needed to know how to act like a girl then she should follow someone she admires which led Kairi to becoming a Michiru Kaiou fan.
On Kairi’s 16th birthday, she did a FaceTime call with Ash to tell him the truth and she had a birthday party with Yukio Kasamatsu’s family attending aside from Yukio because her cousin, Ami Mizuno, was also attending otherwise Yukio’s parents would’ve forced Yukio to attend. From that moment on, she was “reborn” as she was free to live as a girl. However, the process of her awakening as a Sailor Guardian also began around this time as she listened to Michiru Kaiou’s music before falling asleep at night. Crossdressing as a boy repressed her awakening as Sailor Naiad because in her past life as Aqua, she was very feminine. While she was reliving her past life memories in her dreams, she shared her experiences with her teammates who were also reincarnated Neptunian Moon Sailor Guardians. After her awakening as Sailor Naiad was completed, she learned that her teammates were her fellow Neptunian Sailor Guardians and worked alongside them when acting as her alter ago aside from on the court. Her jersey number at Kanagawa Junior High was #8 while her jersey number at Kaijō High is #7.

She has no resentment towards her father although Ryōsuke had many rules in asking her to live as a boy. He admitted that he was a terrible father because he forced her to live as a boy instead of trying to get his wife to face the truth and worked long hours as a doctor, but Kairi told her father that she doesn’t blame him because she loves him for being a devoted husband and admires her father for saving people’s lives and continuing to do so. Her father does not blame her for the death of his wife. She is grateful to her father for getting her to get into basketball and kendo. He takes days off on occasion to be there for her like graduation ceremonies, some birthday parties, or some basketball matches in the semi-finals which she appreciates. She loved her mother and did her best to make her mother happy as “Kai”. She also gave her mother her medicine when her father couldn’t do so. Eimi didn’t leave the house but wished her luck on her basketball games. Her mother apologized for making her suffer from the moment she was born on her death bed and while Kairi said that wasn’t the truth, her mother apologized and called her “Kairi” for one last time.
In her past life as Aqua, she met Princess Mercury at Princess Serenity and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball, and they had interesting conversations about the art of healing and water manipulation. Princess Mercury and Aqua showed off some water manipulation techniques to each other. Their friendship led them to being reborn as cousins. When Kairi went to Tokyo to visit her relatives, she played basketball while Ami watched her, and Ami helped her to refine her shooting techniques after reading up on the sport. She calls Ami “Ami-chan” and Ami calls her “Kai onii-san” which she later changed to “Kairi onee-san”. Ami came to Kairi’s 16th birthday party. Ami was surprised to learn that Kairi was really a girl and that her mother knew the truth that Kairi was biologically female but was glad that Kairi could live as a girl now. Kairi was worried about Ami because Ami studied a lot from when she was little and is very shy but after meeting Ami’s best friends, she was relieved that Ami had good friends now. She had invited Ami to the Michiru Kaiou concert in April, but Ami already had a ticket thanks to Usagi and while Kairi was surprised to hear Ami had friends, she was relieved to hear that. She called Ami to ask about Yukio’s biological hormonal fear and Ami told her about her allergic reaction to love letters. They later learned about the truth about each other’s alter egos as Sailor Guardians and how they met in their past lives.
In her past life as Aqua, she was Asphaleios’s half-sister as their father was Poseidon. They met during Princess Serenity and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball. They were introduced to each other as half-siblings, talked a lot, and shared a dance. Ash is like a younger brother figure to her, and she acts like an older sister to him. Ash’s grandfather taught him and her how to fish and his grandparents told her and Satoshi stories about their youth when they were children. They both tried to catch bugs and frogs together when they were little. Sometimes they were successful, sometimes they were not. In Satoshi’s grandparents’ house, there is an image of Satoshi and Kairi as children crossdressing. They don’t think much of the fact that they are fourth cousins and simply think and refer to each other as cousins unless people ask about how they are related to each other. They do FaceTime calls with one another from time to time. She calls Satoshi by “Ash” since he prefers to be called by his nickname. Ash called her “Kai nii-chan”. He later changed how he addressed her to “Kairi nee-chan”. Satoshi was surprised to learn that Kairi was really a girl and that his mother and grandparents knew the truth but was glad that Kairi could live as a girl now. Because Ami couldn’t go to the Michiru Kaiou concert in April with her, she invited Satoshi to go with her and he enjoyed it. She thinks of his parents as her aunt and uncle. When Satoshi started living in Japan, she saw his father, Red, through a few FaceTime calls Satoshi had with his father and Satoshi told her to come say hi to him. She thinks Red is rather selfish but because she loves Satoshi a lot and understands that he is understanding of his father’s desire to go follow his dreams, she won’t voice her negative thoughts about him except around her father. Satoshi’s parents see her as a niece figure, but she has a closer relationship with Hanako. She sees Satoshi’s grandparents as her grandparents. She calls Musashi “Musashi oji-chan” and Mio “Mio oba-chan”. His grandparents and mother knew the truth that Kairi was biologically female. In her previous life as Aqua, she met Kostas, Yukio’s past life self at Princess Serenity and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball. They shared a dance and talked about swords and sword fighting. They both showed off a bit of their swordplay to one another. That moment led to them being reincarnated as childhood friends. Her father and Yukio’s mother work at the same hospital in Kanagawa, Yokohama Municipal Hospital. Her father was transferred to Yokohama Municipal Hospital from Tokyo General Hospital and has lived in Yokohama ever since. Because Shinobu talked to Ryōsuke about how she sent her son to Mini-Basketball, that was how Ryōsuke decided to send Kairi to Mini-Basketball. Shinobu knew that Kairi was biologically female and simply introduced her son to “Kai” and told him to take care of Kai. She is childhood friends with Yukio and Hideo Kasamatsu because of Mini-Basketball and her father knowing Yukio’s mother. She met Hideo when she turned 6 at Mini-Basketball. Because of her closeness with the two Kasamatsu families, they see her as family. She calls Yukio, “Yukio nii-san” and Hideo called her “Kai nii-san” and later addressed her as “Kairi nee-san”. Both brothers later learned the truth about her biological sex. Hideo and she were basketball teammates back when she attended Kanagawa Junior High. She owns Monthly Basketball magazines with articles on Yukio and Hideo. Mihiro aka Sailor Charon
They met each other and befriended each other at Princess Serenity and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball in their previous lives. They are childhood friends because Mihiro who was in 1st grade met Kairi who was 5 years old through Mini-Basketball and her aunt who told Yukio to take care of “Kai”. They see each other like family since Kairi is close to her and her cousins, Yukio, and Hideo. Kairi calls Mihiro “Mihiro nee-chan”. She also learned kendo with Mihiro under the tutelage of Mihiro’s father, Yuji. They met each other in high school thanks to the fact Umiko Kaisei made them both members of the Kasamatsu Secret Fan Club. Mihiro then learned that Kairi was actually a girl and was glad that she could live as a girl now. At times, they cooperate in their alter egos and learned about the fact the other was a Sailor Guardian. Mihiro entrusted Kairi with comforting her cousin after his team lost in the Inter-High and thought that if there was a woman, she trusted to take care of Yukio for the rest of his life it would be either Umiko Kaisei or Kairi Mizuno.
Mika Midorima aka Sailor Orthosie
Since Kairi is seen as a close family member with Yukio's and Hideo's family as well as Mihiro's family, Mihiro automatically invites her to any couples’ events or group gatherings she thinks of. Mika is Hideo's girlfriend so they first encountered each other at a camping trip Mihiro proposed so they could gather before they left for college. As they are both invited to couples’ events or group gatherings Mihiro comes up with, this allows them to encounter each other often and become friends.

She dreamt of meeting his past life, Prince Caelum as Aqua, and she recalls falling in love with him at first sight. He talked about his future as the future king of Uranus and plans he had for his home world, and she admired the leadership qualities he had, and he talked about going to her father to make her his future Queen which made her blush, and she couldn’t help but believe in that future he spoke of. He saw her swordsmanship and couldn’t help but demonstrate his swordsmanship as well. She recalled that Prince Caelum had one earring which is why she couldn’t help but stare at her classmate, Ryōta Kise, when she was lost in thought. While she was hanging out at her favorite bookstore, she was browsing through the magazine section then a magazine with Haruka Tenou on the front cover caught her eye. She recognized Haruka’s appearance as like that of Prince Caelum. She asked Satoshi to go with her to Mugen Academy because she lied that she wanted to explore the facilities and see the celebrities, he told they had to stop by Touou Academy first so he can bring a friend along since his friend’s sibling also goes there. The two of them instantly recognized each other from first sight because both of them were remembering their past lives through dreams. Kairi called Sora “T-Tenou Haruka?” Sora had to explain “I, I’m actually Tenou Haruka’s younger twin brother by a minute, Tenou Sora. We’re identical twins as you can see.” Kairi replied, “I see, so… Haruka is Pri–” She covered her mouth, but Sora knew what she was talking about. He later confronted her by asking “So, you already know who I am, Aqua? Or should I say Sailor Naiad?” They then asked each other how much they remembered of their previous lives. They didn’t remember everything, but they at least remembered the night they met each other, and they both were undergoing the process of dreaming of their past lives. Sora then offered to get to know their current selves and they fell in love all over again. They then formally met each other’s families and started dating. Sora got an ear piercing because of the incident Kairi went through with Ryōta. She occasionally flirts with him which makes him get flustered, but she finds his reactions to be endearing. Kairi tells Sora that she had a tiny crush on Yukio which made him jealous, but she reassured him that she loves him a lot and that he’s her only true love. Their first date was a Michiru Kaiou concert. She introduced Sora to (who got his ear pierced at the time) to Yukio, Mihiro, and Hideo Kasamatsu, and Ryōta Kise. In the future, after Sora became the CEO of Tenou aircraft manufacturing company and Kairi became a doctor, they got married.

Kairi is a superhuman with a degree of super strength, able to lift heavy fish out of the water with a fishing rod, individuals, and a claymore that are heavier with her with a bit of effort. Her endurance is better than most ordinary girls but falls short compared to a human male in her civilian form. She can hold her breath for long periods of time, breathe, and speak underwater. When she is submerged in the sea, she can willingly transform into a mermaid. She can somewhat communicate with fish.

In her past life, she was the daughter of Poseidon and the naiad, Euboea. She lived on the island, Euboea, with her mother until she was spirited away to Neptune for her initiation ceremony as Princess Neptune's guardian Sailor Guardian. She was the half-sibling of Crown Prince Triton, Princess Halimede, Princess Neptune, Asphaleios (Ash Ketchum from Pokémon), the Baron of Triton, and Anastasia aka Sailor Hippocamp (Anastasia from Claymore). Her name was Aqua whose alter ego was Sailor Naiad who guarded her post on Naiad during the Silver Millennium.

Since Poseidon was an amorous god, it resulted in Sailor Naiad and Sailor Hippocamp being Princess Neptune's and Sailor Halimede's half-sisters, but it has allowed them to have a sisterly bond even in modern days.
Kimi Kaiou aka Sailor Halimede
In their previous lives, they were half siblings as they shared Poseidon as a father. They both share a role as Neptunian Moon Sailor Guardians and are Sailor Neptune’s Sailor Guardians. They were both Princess Neptune’s elder sisters. Kairi is whom Kimi would consider to be a true fan of Michiru. After learning that Kairi had to crossdress in the past, Kimi was surprised but noted that she was able to adapt her true feminine nature that she had in her past life rather easily and recalls Kairi from her past life. She thinks it’s rather sweet that Kairi admired Michiru to the point that she used Michiru’s image to inspire her towards acting in a more feminine manner. Both are members of the Kasamatsu Secret Fan Club, so Kimi was surprised to learn that Kairi was Yukio Kasamatsu’s childhood friend. Kimi mentioned once that she could’ve gone to Kaijō with Kairi but decided to go to Shūtoku High to be near Michiru aside from a deeper calling. Despite being from rival teams, they get along rather well because as Kimi noted, they were sisters in a previous life and Kairi also sees Kimi as an elder sister figure. After getting recruited by the coach of Kaijō High’s girls’ basketball team, she met the captain of the girls’ team, Umiko Kaisei, who listened to the story of Kairi being forced to cross-dress which Kairi retold to the coach of Kaijō High girls’ basketball team. Umiko already knew from her past life memories that Kairi was a fellow reincarnated Neptunian Moon Sailor Guardian and told Kairi that she is free to live as a girl now and that if she needed help navigating life as a girl then she has friends on the Kaijō High girls’ basketball team who can help her with that. Umiko also helpfully advised her that if she needed to know how to act like a girl then she should follow someone she admires which led Kairi to becoming a Michiru Kaiou fan. Umiko Kaisei supported her wish. When Kaijō High’s boys’ basketball team lost to Touou Academy, Umiko and Mihiro entrusted her to go inside the locker room and comfort Yukio and she managed to do so. As Kairi’s upperclassman, Umiko acts as a helpful guide when navigating her troubles with her past life dreams and becoming a Sailor Guardian.
Oki Shima aka Sailor Neso
In their previous lives, they gathered during their initiation ceremony as Princess Neptune’s guardian Sailor Guardians. When Kairi applied for Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team, Oki was there taking notes on new applicants. Oki calls Kairi “Kairi-chan” and Kairi calls Oki “Oki-senpai”, “senpai”, and later “Oki-san”. Oki learned of Kairi’s past of being forced to crossdress as a boy for most of their lives and although Kairi celebrated her 16th birthday as a girl for the first time in her life, Oki decided to do another celebration of Kairi’s new start as a girl with the team. Oki made Kairi a light blue cake for the celebration. When Oki asks the regulars to drink her vegetable smoothies so that they stay healthy, Kairi tends to discuss the health properties of the vegetable that is used but Oki will remind her to drink her smoothie and Kairi does comply but ends up making a face in those situations. When Oki offered everyone to eat lunch at her family restaurant on a Sunday following Ash’s arrival and offered a chocolate dessert on the house, Kairi felt that it wasn’t fair if she and her cousin didn’t pay for the meal, but Oki insisted on doing it for free. Kairi let Oki know that Ash likes chocolate pudding and that she would be fine with whatever chocolate dessert Oki had to offer aside from enjoying Oki’s cooking in general. Sometimes, Oki and Aimi get included on one of Aimi’s shopping trips if their team is not hanging out together.

The symbol of Naiad shines on the Gloss Rod, she tilts the Gloss Rod to the right with her true-blue manicured hand, she spins the Gloss Rod around her, and raises her arms like a curled V while her bare body is shining in pale true-blue light while an ocean wave surrounds her from a ring on the ground and she reemerges fully transformed. She flicks her hair in a right to left direction using her hand. White sparkles brush against her lips, giving her some gloss on her lips, and she stands in her pose before a true-blue looking Naiad.

It is the typical Solar System fuku but her back bow has pointed, true blue tails with golden trims that have three white beads and a mirror charm hanging from it. Her dominant color is true blue, and her accent color is pink. Her earrings are light blue beads with long tear shaped beads dangling from them. She has no stripes on her collar. Her choker pendant is a light blue bubble. Her boots are blue with golden planets of Neptune on the top ends with pink cords and pink layers underneath the boots. She has short gloves.

Purification Ritual!
Sailor Naiad twirls around while raising the Aqua Sword and as she lowers the blade, a stream of freshwater gushes forward, cleansing any negative energy that comes into contact with it. Any saltwater attack that collides with this attack turns into freshwater.
Enchanted Medicine!
Sailor Naiad raises her sword and slashes it downwards, creating multiple streams of water that make contact with the target and explodes.
Naiad Immersion!
(Achieved in her Eternal form.) Sailor Naiad makes a slashing motion from right to left which creates a massive wave of seawater that envelops its target and destroys it upon contact.

Thanks to Rose who was chatting with me and thought it would be funny if Kairi was mistaken for a boy, then my brain thought of something angsty to explain why she was thought of as a boy in her past. This was most likely inspired by the chapter, Princess Jewel, in the manga, Plant Dolls. Plus, Rose said that the idea of different treatment methods being used on Kairi’s mother but didn’t help her sanity would work. Disney's Mulan, Aqua, and Kairi from the Kingdom Hearts franchise also served as inspirations when designing her character. As for her appearance, her design was inspired by Aoi Kiriya from Aikatsu! as it was similar to how I envisioned Kairi in my head and Sailor Neptune.
