Personality
Oki is an energetic and cheerful girl who doesn’t let negativity get to her easily due to being self-aware and will find ways to regulate her mood. Because of her caring personality, she is well-liked as a waitress at Happy Island and as a manager on Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team. She started practicing breathwork to help her deal with the stress of being a manager in junior high and her daily practice of breathwork makes her calm and collected. However, when it comes to people who are dishonest, she will easily lose her cool and get loud and she is nimble with her fingers as she is good at sewing. Oki is hardworking but can end up exhausting herself to the point where she ends up lazing around or falling asleep depending on how tired she is. Her family practices all three major religions: Shintoism, Buddhism, and Christianity so she has learned about those religions and has a spiritual side.
In her free time, she looks at travel books.

Oki was born and raised in Okinawa City. Her father, Hiroyuki, owned a family restaurant called Happy Island. When she was 4 years old, her father taught her how to swim and surf at the beach. When she was 8 years old, he taught her how to play beach volleyball since she had seen him play beach volleyball with his friends and wanted to do the same with her friends. In elementary school, she was invited to play on the basketball team because of her height and became the center on the basketball team. During the 6th grade, her mother, Fuka, who was a flight attendant had to relocate to Yokohama which was home to the Golden Airlines headquarters. Her father started a new “Happy Island” restaurant in Yokohama. When she entered Kanagawa Junior High, she tried to apply as a center, but Umiko Kaisei made it as the official center since she was taller, but she decided to support the team as a manager in addition to being a bench player. After dreaming of her past life, she awakened as Sailor Neso at the age of 14. When Umiko Kaisei was recruited by Kaijō High, she decided to follow her friend there and become the manager of the girls’ team in addition to being a bench player. Her position as a bench player is center and her jersey number is #13.

Her father, Hiroyuki, was athletic and had a passion for cooking. He taught her how to swim and surf at the age of 4 and play beach volleyball when she was 8 years old. From a young age, she helped at the restaurant by helping serve a meal or a drink to a customer until he gradually increased the load on her tray for her to serve to the customers. He always told her that one day the Happy Island restaurant would be hers, so it became a dream of hers to inherit the restaurant and be head chef like her father. Thanks to his work as the owner of a family restaurant, he was around more often compared to his wife who worked as a flight attendant. He started paying Oki for her work in the restaurant when she turned 15. She always admired how her father’s cooking made people happy and that he’s even willing to cook meals for their family at the end of the day.
Her mother, Fuka, worked as a flight attendant and when she got dressed for work, she always admired how lovely her mother looked. Oki would be sure to tell Fuka “Mama, you look so pretty.” And she would be sure to tell her “Thank you, my daughter.” When Oki was younger, she once asked her father why did her mother have to be away often? Hiroyuki explained that it was because Fuka loved them and wanted them to live a happy life, so she had to earn money. Fuka often got them gifts when the plane landed and thanks to her job, she gets discounted flights to Okinawa so they make short trips back there when they can and after Oki entered college, they could make longer trips to Okinawa. She has inherited her mother’s love of serving people and her mother’s travel books inspire her to want to see the world.

In their previous lives, Neso assisted in serving meals to the royal family of Neptune and Asphaleios, an illegitimate son of Poseidon and Baron of Triton would sometimes be in attendance for these meals, and he would exchange his thanks to Neso. It wasn’t until a royal ball hosted by the royal family of Neptune that he told her to send his compliments to the chef and he learned that the chef was Neso’s father. When Kairi Mizuno asked the coach for a day off from practice to pick her cousin up from the airport, Oki, and the regulars of Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team were curious about him. When Oki saw his picture on Kairi’s phone, she instantly recognized him as Asphaleios from her previous life despite the differences in his current appearance. She said “Kairi-chan, on behalf of your cousin arriving to live in Japan, I’d like to invite the both of you and the rest of the team to eat at my Papa’s, Happy Island, for lunch this Sunday on the house and I’ll even throw a chocolate dessert, how does that sound?” Ash enjoyed his welcoming lunch and the dessert Kairi requested on his behalf, chocolate pudding. Even though Ash can’t cook, he likes to assist her in the kitchen by helping her prepare the ingredients by washing them or making a salad aside from being her taste tester. Once, he went on a grocery shopping trip with Oki so she could make a new dish and they talked about their travel dreams. Oki talked about traveling to South Korea and Greece. Ash encouraged her to want to go to those countries and she inspired him to want to go to those places and he said that one day, they’ll head there.

In their past lives, Sadaharu was a Mercurian scholar working in the Mercury Castle and the royal family of Mercury invited him along to Princess Serenity’s and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball so that he could relax and have some fun. When the guests were asked to dance with someone from another celestial home body, Neso danced with the Mercurian scholar, talked to him during and after the dance, and kissed him in the gazebo of the Moon Castle’s gardens. When Oki was 13 years old and Sadaharu was 10 years old, they met at her family restaurant, Happy Island. Sadaharu’s mother took him there because she had heard of the restaurant’s growing popularity. Once Sadaharu ate his meal, he shed tears saying, “This food is so delicious that it’s making me unbelievably happy.” Oki got him napkins to wipe his tears and offered him a watermelon smoothie. Sadaharu remembers their encounter lasting 4.2 seconds and thought of her as his first love. Thanks to hanging out with Ash and some of the Solar System Celestial Knights in their civilian forms, she was able to meet Sadaharu again as teenagers. They both admire how hardworking the other is for their sports teams and Sadaharu likes that she’s calm and collected. After a dangerous situation in which the Solar System Celestial Knights and Satellite Sailor Guardians had blood loss after an enemy attack, Sadaharu learns that she is Sailor Neso and promises to keep it a secret. However, she couldn’t date him unless he understood that she had to prioritize her princess’s safety over his if they were both in danger. He understood and said that he would do his best to make that a low percentage which made her giggle. After she talked to Michiru about her relationship with him, she got her blessing to date him. In the future, when Sadaharu becomes a data analyst and Oki inherits the Happy Island restaurant, they get married.

In their past lives, when Thalassa was growing up, she lived in Neptune Castle with Princess Halimede and Princess Neptune and Neso would be there to help serve their meals. They gathered during their initiation ceremony as Princess Neptune’s guardian Sailor Guardians. At a ball hosted by Neptune’s royal family, they exchanged a few words as Neso offered Thalassa food. It wasn’t until Princess Serenity’s and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball that they finally had a proper conversation. Thalassa said that she always wanted to talk to Neso since they were both Neptunian Moon Guardians. The two of them met in Kanagawa Junior High as classmates who both applied for the school’s basketball team. Even though Oki didn’t get the center position since Umiko was taller and more skilled, she was fine with supporting the team as a bench player and as a manager. They both awakened as Sailor Guardians at the age of 14 and learned that they were comrades serving the same princess. Oki said that they must be fated to be good friends again in their current lives and Umiko agreed. They are the eldest members of Team Kaijō aside from being the tallest. Umiko is very motherly in her characteristics while Oki is caring in her actions. Due to their responsibilities on the team, they both spend time together so Oki can update her on the fact a practice match was scheduled and give her data on rival players. Since Umiko is good at embroidery and Oki is good at sewing, she has asked Umiko to teach her. Oki makes vegetable smoothies so that the team can stay healthy and although Umiko will drink them, she greatly dislikes them.
Aimi Umino aka Sailor Laomedeia
In their previous lives, they gathered during their initiation ceremony as Princess Neptune’s guardian Sailor Guardians. During a ball hosted by Neptune’s royal family, Neso offered Laomedeia some food and Laomedeia cheerfully thanked her. During Princess Serenity’s and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball, Thalassa approached Neso to talk to her and Laomedeia joined in their conversation and befriended Neso in the process. The two of them encountered each other in Kanagawa Junior High while Aimi was applying for the girls’ basketball team and Oki was taking notes. Since Umiko was friends with Oki, the team’s manager, Aimi started hanging out with her as well. Oki calls Aimi “Aimi-chan” and Aimi calls her “Oki-san”. Aimi loves Oki’s cheesecake and her cooking in general, so she likes to learn about baking and cooking from the older girl aside from cooking together. She tries to include Oki on her shopping trips when possible. They awakened as Sailor Guardians when Oki was 14 and Aimi was 13 and learned that they were comrades serving the same princess. Oki said that they must be fated to be good friends again in their current lives and Aimi agreed. When Oki offered everyone to eat lunch at her family restaurant on a Sunday following Ash’s arrival and offered a chocolate dessert, Aimi suggested Oki make a chocolate cheesecake that they both can share, and Oki decided to make the cake big enough for everyone to share which Aimi thought was a good idea.
Shion Fuyumi aka Sailor Larissa
In their previous lives, they gathered during their initiation ceremony as Princess Neptune’s guardian Sailor Guardians. During Princess Serenity’s and Princess Tranquility’s 14th birthday ball, Thalassa approached Neso to talk to her and Laomedeia joined in their conversation. Thalassa and Laomedeia decided that they should gather all the Neptunian Moon Guardians to talk together since they would probably not get a moment like this again. When Larissa joined in the conversation after being invited, she found that aside from Marina aka Sailor Triton (Mi Yue from Call Me Emperor), both she and Neso were not of noble lineage among the Neptunian Moon Guardians. When Shion applied for Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team, Oki was there taking notes on new applicants. Oki calls Shion “Shion-chan” and Shion refers to her as “Oki-san” or “Oki-senpai”. When Oki asks the regulars to drink her vegetable smoothies so that they stay healthy, Shion is the only one who is unfazed at the idea of drinking vegetable smoothies unless they have a bitter taste or if bitter melon is used to make a smoothie and, in those situations, she will ask if Oki is planning on torturing the regulars. When Oki offered everyone to eat lunch at her family restaurant on a Sunday following Ash’s arrival and offered a chocolate dessert, Shion asked her if it could be white chocolate for her and Oki made her a white chocolate mousse that she enjoyed but she also loves Oki’s cooking in general. Sometimes, the girls encounter each other at the beach or Oki gets included on one of Aimi’s and her shopping trips if their team is not hanging out together.
Kairi Mizuno aka Sailor Naiaid
In their previous lives, they gathered during their initiation ceremony as Princess Neptune’s guardian Sailor Guardians. When Kairi applied for Kaijō’s girls’ basketball team, Oki was there taking notes on new applicants. Oki calls Kairi “Kairi-chan” and Kairi calls Oki “Oki-senpai”, “senpai”, and later “Oki-san”. Oki learned of Kairi’s past of being forced to crossdress as a boy for most of their lives and although Kairi celebrated her 16th birthday as a girl for the first time in her life, Oki decided to do another celebration of Kairi’s new start as a girl with the team. Oki made Kairi a light blue cake for the celebration. When Oki asks the regulars to drink her vegetable smoothies so that they stay healthy, Kairi tends to discuss the health properties of the vegetable that is used but Oki will remind her to drink her smoothie and Kairi does comply but ends up making a face in those situations. When Oki offered everyone to eat lunch at her family restaurant on a Sunday following Ash’s arrival and offered a chocolate dessert on the house, Kairi felt that it wasn’t fair if she and her cousin didn’t pay for the meal, but Oki insisted on doing it for free. Kairi let Oki know that Ash likes chocolate pudding and that she would be fine with whatever chocolate dessert Oki had to offer aside from enjoying Oki’s cooking in general. Sometimes, Oki and Aimi get included on one of Aimi’s shopping trips if their team is not hanging out together.

Inspirations
Her character design and the fact her father owns a family restaurant was inspired by Mallow from Pokémon Sun and Moon. She was inspired by Lee Kang from the Chocolate Kdrama in the fact that she met her love interest at her family restaurant, gave him something to wipe his tears with, and served him something when they were younger. She was also inspired by Lee Kang’s love interest and the female protagonist of the Chocolate Kdrama, Moon Cha Young. Her motto was based ona quote from Buddha in Old Path White Clouds by Thích Nhất Hạnh pg.551 “Bhikkhus, you should take refuge in yourself and be an island unto yourself. Do not rely on anything else, and you will not be drowned by the waves of sorrow and despair. You should take refuge in the Dharma and take the Dharma as the island.” Neso means “the island-goddess” or “nimble” so I tried to incorporate that by making her nimble with her fingers by being good at sewing. Islands represent entrapment which is part of her attack name “Entrapment Riptide”, but I also think of paradise. I’m aware that making Neso the Sailor Guardian of Paradise sounds like Eastwood Wong’s Eden and the Army of Paradise but oh well. I thought of waterfalls happening on islands and whirlpools and riptides happening in the ocean for her attacks. Thanks to my coauthor cousin for helping me figure out the reason why she had to transfer to Kanagawa which was due to her mother’s work before I figured out her mother’s occupation. I was probably inspired by Mikako Kouda’s “Happy Berry” brand when I named Hiroyuki Shima’s restaurant “Happy Island”. Since Aimi’s favorite food wasn’t cheesecake despite Hanon Hosho’s favorite food being cheesecake, I decided to make it Oki’s favorite food.
