Yun-jin can be quite friendly with others and tends to use physical contact when interacting with others such as looping her arm over people’s shoulders or fist bumping on people’s arm. She can be very blunt, tending to blurt out what’s on her mind and can have a stern demeanor. Yun-jin is determined and isn’t afraid to confront others when necessary. When speaking with elders, she speaks formally and doesn’t hesitate when it comes to important matters. She is religious and believes life is precious because of her Buddhist upbringing except for the lives of demons. She wants to protect people, when possible, by slaying demons that come her way and is very emotional.

Background
The Cheons were descended from a Buddhist monk who eloped with a gisaeng he saved from a demon during the Joseon period. Prior to being born, her elder twin brother was stillborn and due to her parents mourning the loss, they had her live as the son they never had. Her paternal grandfather, Jae-suk, became a Buddhist monk after his wife’s passing and he wanted to gainsay his son and daughter-in-law from doing such a thing, but he couldn’t do it after all, seeing how much his son and daughter-in-law couldn’t face reality. When her parents were busy with work, she would visit her grandfather at the temple he lived at. When she was 7 years old, she had a demon encounter, but she remembered her grandfather’s advice to pray to Buddha for blessings, guidance, and protection and prayed as loud as she could, making the demon turn to ashes. Jae-suk who was trying to get to Yun-jin in time, was relieved that she was safe. Afterwards, her parents enrolled her in a Taekwondo class and Jae-suk taught her about their ancestor, her spiritual powers, and she received a pewter staff from her grandfather which she uses when fighting with demons.
When she was 8 years old, she sat with her father as he watched volleyball matches played by the national Korean male volleyball team and wanted to try it. She was soon enrolled in classes and grew to like it. When Yun-jin was in junior high, she was part of the boys’ volleyball team as a blocker and she and a few friends made a dance team called “A Best” and they competed in many dance competitions around the country. After winning a prize at the first annual competition held by Sweet Track Entertainment, she signed up with the entertainment company and officially started her training in 2009. She later became the rapper of the duo girl group, Faith.

Yun-jin received a gender-neutral name because her parents felt regretful that her potential elder twin brother didn’t survive birth and wanted her to live in her elder twin brother’s place. Both couldn’t face reality that they lost their son at birth, so they had Yun-jin have her hair cut, dress in boy clothes, and live as a male. From an early age, they explained to her that her brother died during birth, and they told her that it wasn’t fair that she lived while her brother didn’t so won’t she live as her brother? Yun-jin painfully agreed and went with her parents’ wishes but as time passed on and her body developed, she wanted to live as a girl. She wanted to please her parents by living as a male, but she eventually grew resentful that she couldn’t live as her birth gender. When it was time for her to go to pursue a trainee opportunity with Sweet Track Entertainment, she moved out of her parents’ home and said that moving forward, she would live as the daughter they never had and cut ties with them.
He is her paternal grandfather and the strongest familial bond she has. When she was young and her parents were busy with work, she would often visit the Buddhist temple he lived at. He taught her about Buddhism and to pray to Buddha for blessings, guidance, and protection. When she was 7 years old, she had an encounter with a demon, but she remembered her grandfather’s advice and she prayed to Buddha as loudly as she could, making the demon incinerate into ashes. Her grandfather was trying to get to her in time to protect her and was relieved she was alright. Jae-suk taught her about how they were descended from a Buddhist monk, and he gave her a pewter staff to help her with fighting demons.

Inspirations
When looking up names for Yun-jin, I saw that Yun-jin meant willow and since Helike was a Jovian Moon whose name meant willow, her Sailor Guardian identity was sealed. As a Kpop Demon Hunters original character, she had to be part of a pop band and her ancestry come from the Joseon period. I was probably inspired by Inuyasha in which monks have purifying powers and are able to ward off demons hence her ancestry had a monk, and her grandfather became a monk to teach her about her powers and give her a pewter staff to fight against demons. I am strangely intrigued by the idea of a Buddhist monk being in love hence her monk ancestor had to elope with a gisaeng. I suddenly came up with the idea of the pewter staff breaking to become her attack in her super form. For her ability in her eternal form, I was inspired by the Bodhisattva, Guan Yin, who holds a willow branch, and I investigated the purpose of the willow branch. I like Brown Eyed Girls, so Miryo had to be her Korean voice aside from her having a fittingly husky voice and I imagined Yun-jin to have a deep voice when pretending to be a guy so her male Korean voice had to be T.O.P from Big Bang. I did research for her Japanese voices, so Chanmina who was mixed Korean, Japanese, and Yuki Chiba, a Japanese rapper with a deep speaking voice was fitting. Her backstory to get into the industry was inspired by DBSK’s U-know Yunho and my coauthor cousin suggested volleyball as a sport for her.I was inspired by Kairi aka Sailor Naiad being a replacement goldfish for a potential male sibling hence that inspired her backstory. Yun-jin being able to speak Spanish and Italian is inspired by Miryo’s rap in Sixth Sense “Grazie, Gracias”.
